Gospel Reflection for Sunday 18th October

18th October 2020

Matthew 22:15-21

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Give to God the things that are God’s

That is no small ask! So, what are the things that are God’s? Well, basically everything: my life, my family, my friends, my work, my education. It’s all been given to me by God and He wants it back! Not in a selfish or mean way, but perhaps in another way.

Value Added?

First, everything has been given to me “on loan”, so to speak. What value or “interest” have I added to the gift given me by God? For instance, what kind of life do I want to give back to God? Is it one where kindness, mercy, and love are shown in my daily life? Each day I build my life, because every choice I make either adds to, or takes away from, the gift I am meant to give back to God. That’s every choice, big or small. It’s how I treat my siblings, what I choose to engage with online, what mean, or kind words come from my mouth about someone.

Heads or tails?

Jesus used a coin to teach a lesson about what to give to God. Perhaps you could keep a coin by your bed as a reminder to review your actions from the day. It would be helpful to take stock each night before bed and ask the question, “What kind of gift am I giving back to God”?
